FIDES     1615

 

The frigate FIDES (Fidelity) was constructed according to a concept by the royal majesty King Christian IV. His idea was originally to allow a relatively small ship to carry a limited number of very large guns - easy to manoeuvre in the Baltic Sea, able to damage the Swedish capital ships.

King Christian IV (1588-1648) vas a very religious man; he called the ship
FIDES (Faith) and according to this a girl on the port counter gallery is hol-
ding a heart (Love), on the starboard side a girl is a carrying an anchor,
(Hope), and in the center of the counter a girl is holding a cross (Faith).
